1% For The Planet
As of January 5th, 2018, we decided to move past the promise of doing no harm and instead take an active role by becoming members of 1% For The Planet! By joining the 1% For The Planet team, we pledge 1% of all gross sales to an environmentally focused non-profit! For 2018, we chose to work with Navdanya, a women led, organic farming non-profit, based in Dehradun, India. More on them below.
Navdanya
For 2018, we are extremely excited to announce that we will be teaming up with Navdanya! Their mission is to "empower the communities belonging to any religion, cast, sex, groups, landless people, small/marginal farmers, deprived women, child or any other needy person, to ensure that they have enough to eat, live in a healthy environment and are able to take action independently..."
Navdanya travels the country preserving indigenous seeds, educating mostly rural communities about organic farming practices, and setting up community seed banks, where anyone can go find local GMO-free seeds.
Over the last two decades Navdanya has worked with more than 2,000,000 people across all of India. They have conserved more than 3,000 varieties of indigenous rice, created 122 seed banks in 18 states, and teamed up with local partners to help them become self sufficient and self supporting. As of today, more than 500,000 Indian farmers are primary members.
Navdanya also created a University nestled between the Ganga and Yamuna river in the Himalyan mountains in Uttarakhand. The university, "created a biodiversity sanctuary for birds, butterflies, insects and soil microorganisms, through saving more than 1500 varieties of seeds and trees."
In 2017, Navdanya added eco feminism to their platform, with a mission that seeks to, "strengthen women’s grassroots movements and provide women with a common international platform to air their views."
We believe Navdanya's mission overlaps perfectly with our own philosophies and provides communities a chance at a better/healthier tomorrow. We just hope to be a small part of it!
Lastly, wanted to thank Amanda and the entire team at 1% For The Planet! We also encourage everyone to look for the label and support the community of businesses who have made it their mission to give back to the environment!
